Why some defenders of positive duties serve a bad theoretical cocktail

چکیده
In the literature on global justice, there has been a lengthy debate about what world’s rich owe to poor. Some have argued that individuals positive duties of beneficence help poor, while others only negative not harm them. A common objection former view is once it accepted exist, fulfilling these will be overdemanding since can almost always little more. tried overcome this overdemandingness by setting cut-off points for how demanding morality is. article, we aim show problematic committed following propositions: (1) Positive aid exist; (2) The serious challenge anyone who accepts and (3) Setting constitutes plausible way objection. Showing commitment (1), interest given several influential theorists are set views. This views simply bad theoretical cocktail.

Tort Duties of Landowners: A Positive Theory
One of the most controversial areas of modern tort law is that of the duty of landowners toward people who visit their land. The common law divided land visitors into three types: invitees, licensees, and trespassers. The highest duty of care was owed to the invitee and the lowest to the trespasser. The distinctions led courts to hand down harsh decisions and to draw formal lines between the ca...
متن کاملWhy bad ideas are a good idea
What would happen if we wrote an Abstract that was the exact opposite of what the paper described? This is a bad idea, but it makes us think more carefully than usual about properties of Abstracts. This paper describes BadIdeas, a collection of techniques that uses ‘bad’ or ‘silly’ ideas to inspire creativity, explore design domains and teach critical thinking in interaction design. We describe...
متن کاملWhy Boltzmann Brains Are Bad
Some modern cosmological models predict the appearance of Boltzmann Brains: observers who randomly fluctuate out of a thermal bath rather than naturally evolving from a low-entropy Big Bang. A theory in which most observers are of the Boltzmann Brain type is generally thought to be unacceptable, although opinions differ. I argue that such theories are indeed unacceptable: the real problem is wi...
متن کاملDo human transposable element small RNAs serve primarily as genome defenders or genome regulators?
It is currently thought that small RNA (sRNA) based repression mechanisms are primarily employed to mitigate the mutagenic threat posed by the activity of transposable elements (TEs). This can be achieved by the sRNA guided processing of TE transcripts via Dicer-dependent (e.g., siRNA) or Dicer-independent (e.g., piRNA) mechanisms. For example, potentially active human L1 elements are silenced ...
متن کاملVictims, bullies, and their defenders: a longitudinal study of the coevolution of positive and negative networks.
The complex interplay between bullying/victimization and defending was examined using a longitudinal social network approach (stochastic actor-based models). The (co)evolution of these relations within three elementary schools (Grades 2-5 at Time 1, ages 8-11, N = 354 children) was investigated across three time points within a year. Most bullies and defenders were in the same grade as the vict...
